our story

Learn how We Rock went from a one-week rock camp in 2014 to a year-round hub for creativity, inclusivity, and empowerment.

Empowering Voices, Building Community

Founded in 2014 as Girls Rock Charlotte, We Rock Charlotte began as a transformative one-week summer camp that empowered young girls to find their voices through music. Co-founders Kelly Finley (she/her) and Krystle Baller (they/them) shared a vision of creating a space where creativity, confidence, and self-expression could thrive. As the camp grew in popularity, it became clear that its mission needed to expand to reflect the diversity of the Charlotte community and the evolving conversations around gender identity and inclusivity.

In 2022, Girls Rock Charlotte rebranded as We Rock Charlotte, marking a significant step in its journey. The name change represented a commitment to serving individuals of all genders, including women, girls, and gender-diverse people, while maintaining the core values of equity and empowerment.

Over the past decade, We Rock Charlotte has evolved into a year-round hub for creativity, social justice, and community engagement. By integrating music, film, and art, the organization amplifies underrepresented voices, fosters collaboration, and encourages self-expression.

We Rock's programs not only teach technical skills but also inspire participants to use their creativity as a tool for social change.

At its heart, We Rock Charlotte is more than just a music and arts organization, it’s a movement. By fostering safe, inclusive spaces for people of all ages, We Rock Charlotte builds connections, nurtures self-confidence, and empowers individuals to create a more just and equitable world. Whether it’s through a child’s first band performance, an adult finding their voice in Rock Roulette, or community members gathering at an all-ages show, We Rock Charlotte is where creativity and connection intersect.

Today, the organization continues to expand its reach, hosting workshops, concerts, and events in its vibrant home in Charlotte’s NoDA neighborhood. With its inclusive mission, We Rock Charlotte is not just shaping the artists of tomorrow, it’s cultivating a generation of changemakers.
